Plymouth was mentioned for the first time under its ancient name Sutton in 1231.
It acquired city rights and its present name in 1439. From 16th centruy onwards
Plymouth has been starting point of several oversea expeditions of sir Walter
Raleigh, sir Francis Drake and James Cook. Today Plymouth is the location of
the Royal-British naval shipyard. The naval base Devonport in the west of the
town is the biggest naval harbour of Western Europe and the most important employer
in Plymouth.
